How to get married in Lewiston, Maine

Begin a Lewiston wedding with the correct municipal clerk and a confirmed officiant. The license application, the ceremony booking and the photographs are separate parts of the plan.

Know where to file your intentions

If one or both applicants live in Maine, file marriage intentions in the municipality where a Maine resident applicant lives. If both live outside Maine, they can file in any Maine municipal office. Once issued, the license can be used for a ceremony anywhere in Maine.

Lewiston City Hall is at 27 Pine Street. Use the city instructions and contact the Clerk before traveling to confirm documents, current fees, payment and any appointment arrangements.

Leave time for the application

Lewiston asks applicants to allow about 45 minutes for the application process and to arrive before its published daily cutoff. Check the current opening days and cutoff for your visit; do not plan around arriving just before closing.

The city says the license is valid for 90 days from filing the intentions. Plan the visit within that window and confirm when you can collect the completed document before your ceremony.

Arrange the ceremony independently

Receiving a license does not reserve a wedding at City Hall. Choose an authorized Maine officiant and confirm the ceremony location, time and any venue permission. Maine law requires two witnesses other than the officiant to attend and sign the license.

Ask your officiant who handles the completed paperwork, and ask the issuing clerk how to request a certified marriage certificate afterward.

A practical wedding day checklist

  • Correct issuing town, application documents and license ready before the ceremony.
  • Confirmed officiant, two witnesses and permission for the ceremony location.
  • Guest arrival instructions, parking and a place to gather after the vows.
  • Indoor alternative, camera permission and any time limit for photographs.

How I would approach your photographs

For a short Lewiston wedding, I would choose the ceremony and a nearby portrait location first, then build in family photographs around the guests attending. Share a short list of essential groupings before the day so we can keep everyone together.

If you want another location, include driving, parking and walking in the coverage time. An accessible meeting point and an indoor alternative are worth deciding before the weather forecast becomes the main plan.
