A Bar Harbor wedding has three separate arrangements: the Maine marriage paperwork, permission for your ceremony location and your photography plan. If Acadia is part of the day, its park rules are an additional step, not a substitute for the license.

Start with the correct town clerk
Maine residents file marriage intentions where one of them lives. If both live outside Maine, they can file in any Maine town. Bar Harbor encourages visiting couples to send the completed intentions form and required documents ahead by mail, with notarized signatures.
The town lists a $40 filing fee. Review its checklist for photo identification and certified documents after a previous marriage. Both applicants collect and sign the prepared license before the ceremony.
Allow preparation time before your wedding
Bar Harbor says there is no statutory waiting period, but preparing a license can take hours or until the next day in busy periods. Do not arrange travel around a guaranteed same day turnaround. The 90 day ceremony window runs from filing the intentions, not from your arrival at the ceremony.
Arrange an authorized Maine officiant separately. State law requires two witnesses other than the officiant to be present and sign the completed license.
If you want an Acadia ceremony
The National Park Service generally requires a wedding permit, with a limited exception for simple ceremonies of up to ten people that satisfy its restrictions. Check the current rules for your whole group and setup. The published application fee is $125; entrance charges are separate.
Park permission does not provide exclusive access. The park restricts decorations and amplified sound, and receptions are generally not permitted outside concession facilities. Cadillac Mountain has special ceremony restrictions and vehicle reservation requirements; do not assume a sunrise or sunset wedding there is allowed.
Choose the plan that fits your people
- Town or private venue: confirm the room, officiant, guest count, parking and indoor weather alternative directly.
- Acadia: confirm the permitted location, group size and setup with the park before paying for other arrangements.
- Ceremony plus portraits: leave space for the ceremony, family photographs and travel rather than treating several scenic stops as one location.
How I would plan the photographs
I would start with your confirmed ceremony address and how far your guests can comfortably walk. A short route with time together is more useful than a long list of stops that depends on parking being available.
For an outdoor plan, agree on what happens if rain or wind changes the schedule. Keep portraits on permitted durable surfaces, and allow other visitors to use shared paths. Tell us about mobility needs and any second location so travel is included in the coverage request.
