Get the marriage license before your ceremony
You can obtain a license from the Register of Deeds in any North Carolina county for a wedding anywhere in the state. Contact your chosen office for its document, payment and visit requirements. Do not assume every county uses the same appointment process.
North Carolina has no required waiting period after the license is issued. An unused license expires after 60 days. Immediate validity does not guarantee that a magistrate or another officiant will be available that day.
Arrange an authorized officiant and two witnesses
Confirm who will perform your ceremony and bring at least two witnesses. The NC Judicial Branch marriage guide explains officiant eligibility and requirements for special circumstances. Check it before asking a friend to officiate.
Confirm permission for your location
Ask the venue, town or land manager about your exact location and setup before committing. A marriage license is separate from permission to hold an event.
