Every couple that I come across thinks that they're gonna get posed(that they'll stand there, look at each other awkwardly, laugh for that photo, and call it a day.) There's no doubt that every beginning of my session starts out this way. But when I make a few adjustments, like reminding them to focus on holding their hand the entire session, and maybe fix their hair whenever it goes in front of their face, is when the posing actually begins.

But the sudden bursts of laughter, slight playful tickle of the beard, the spontaneously jump for a piggy back, running across the field, hold their hand to guide their way with you in the path, carrying them in their arms, are more or less inspired by the films that I experienced in the past. They bring a natural, cinematic feel to the photos, making each shot a genuine capture of their love story.

WHAT ARE CINEMATIC PHOTOS EXACTLY?

When we think about cinema or movies, we imagine movement, action, and natural, unposed moments. Cinematic photos capture these elements, creating images that feel candid and lifelike. They tell a story and evoke emotions, making each photo a unique narrative of the couple's journey.

WHY DO PEOPLE LOVE CINEMATIC PHOTOS?

Cinematic photos are beloved for their sense of movement and freedom. They capture fleeting moments, encapsulating the story behind each couple. These photos aren't just static images; they convey emotions and dynamics, creating a deeper connection with the viewer.

Where to get engaged?

Choosing the perfect location for your engagement is all about setting the right mood. Some people can make any place feel special, but if you're anything like me, you might prefer a more secluded spot.

Here's what I'd suggest if you're in Wilmington, NC

  • Wrightsville Beach Access 2
  • St. James Episcopal Church

Premium locations

  • Burgwin-Wrights House
  • Airlie Gardens

Indoor engagement sessions are a thing too which you can do in the comfort of your home.

Time IT RIGHT

Shoot during the early morning or late afternoon to capture soft, natural light that adds a cinematic glow to your photos. Try to avoid midday from 9-5pm because they create harsh lights. However, you can still do it if you're pressed for time especially on the beach.

DRESS THE PART

Opt for outfits that complement your chosen theme. Flowing dresses, tailored suits, and vintage-inspired pieces work wonders.

Check out stores like Free People and H&M for options.

Any dress that isn't too busy will work beautifully.

Think about colors and textures that stand out and enhance the overall feel of the shoot. For guys, wear dark colors like navy blue, emerald green, burgundy, or dark khakis. If you're a bigger guy, avoid lighter colors to prevent unflattering lines. Think beach casual wear.

Avoid "dizzying" patterns, logos, and jerseys (let's leave 2006 fashion in the past).

Free People is offer up 50% on their 2024 summer sale: Check it out here.

H&M is also offering 10% discount: check it here.

USE PROPS AND SET DESIGN

Props can add depth and interest to your photos. Whether it's a vintage car, a cozy blanket, or simple items like flowers and lanterns, these elements can help tell your story in a visually compelling way.

Posing

I think every photographer has an opinion about this. This is really where you need to trust your photographer to make you look good in front of the camera.

My goal is to remind you why you're there(no, not because you want good photos.)

I want you open up to me(no, not to the camera) by asking a series of questions

Be a good host for you(by asking you questions and encouraging movement)
