For a Chapel Hill wedding, keep the marriage license appointment separate from your ceremony arrangements. Confirm which office you will use before setting the rest of your day.
If you apply in Orange County
Call 919-245-2700 to schedule an appointment. Both applicants should attend with valid photo identification, their Social Security numbers and a plain copy of each applicant’s birth certificate.
The county lists a $60 license fee and accepts cash, debit or credit cards, money orders and certified bank checks. It does not accept Apple Pay or American Express. Read the official page for requirements involving a previous divorce, applicants under 18 or a hardship that prevents someone attending.
An Orange County license is valid for 60 days and only for a ceremony in North Carolina. The county’s Register of Deeds is in Hillsborough, so account for the trip when planning your Chapel Hill wedding.
Book the ceremony separately
Arrange your officiant or contact the magistrate’s office for current civil ceremony availability. Your license appointment does not include the ceremony.
