Choose a location around the experience you want
Start with your preferred setting and how much walking or travel you want to do. Then confirm access, any portrait reservation, the light, parking and a rain plan. Public access does not automatically mean a paid photo session is permitted.
Wilmington and the coast
Wrightsville Beach, Access 2
Beach portraits, open sky and a relaxed walk are the draw here. I’ve photographed this part of Wrightsville Beach often. Keep the session within public access areas and check parking and beach conditions before setting a time.
Fort Fisher State Recreation Area
Consider Fort Fisher for beach and coastal landscapes near Kure Beach. The state recreation area and the historic site have different boundaries and management; confirm the exact meeting place and the rules for that property. Paid portrait sessions in NC state parks require photography approval.

Airlie Gardens, Wilmington
Live oaks, gardens and paths make Airlie a different choice from the beach. Portrait sessions require a reservation and fee; a general admission ticket is not a portrait reservation. Coordinate the booking before planning outfits or inviting family to join.
Downtown Wilmington Riverwalk
The Cape Fear River gives a session an urban waterfront setting. Pick a meeting point rather than treating the entire Riverwalk as one spot. For a comfortable session, leave time for walking, people passing through and a weather backup.
Greenfield Lake, Wilmington
Greenfield Lake offers an inland alternative to the beach. A short route can suit a couple who wants greenery without spending the whole session moving between locations. Choose an accessible meeting point and confirm current park and photography requirements before the shoot.

Harry Forden Bridge, Wilmington
This is the recognizable One Tree Hill bridge in Wilmington. It may appeal to couples who connect with the show. Treat it as a working public place: plan safe pedestrian access and keep the session out of traffic.
Shackleford Banks, Crystal Coast
This Cape Lookout National Seashore island offers a very different session plan from driving to a beach access. Arrange boat transportation, weather contingencies and the return trip first. Check the park’s current photography requirements and wildlife guidance; a portrait should never depend on approaching the horses.

Raleigh, Durham and the Piedmont
Sarah P. Duke Gardens, Durham
Duke Gardens is in Durham, not Raleigh. It can be part of a Triangle session plan, but photoshoots require a permit and reservation. Apply through the Gardens and wait for confirmation; public garden admission does not reserve a private portrait area.

North Carolina Museum of Art Park, Raleigh
The Museum Park is an outdoor option for a Raleigh session. Its photography rules distinguish ordinary visitor photography from commercial activity, which requires prior authorization. Confirm the proposed portrait session and equipment with the museum before booking.

William B. Umstead State Park, Raleigh area
Woodland trails and lakes offer a quieter visual setting than city streets. Decide how much walking works for both of you and choose the correct park entrance. Check trail notices and obtain the required approval for paid professional photographs.

Reynolda Village, Winston-Salem
The historic village offers a built setting with shops and restaurants. Plan around other visitors and business activity, and ask the property about portrait access before arriving. Do not assume permission to photograph inside a shop or on neighboring garden property.

Outer Banks and the mountains
Jockey’s Ridge State Park, Nags Head
The dunes give a session a broad, open backdrop. Plan for wind, exposed sun and walking on sand rather than assuming it will feel like a paved overlook. Check park alerts and the state park photography-permit process before choosing a date.
Biltmore grounds, Asheville
Biltmore has specific rules for personal engagement portraits, admission, equipment and business use of images. Posed photography inside Biltmore House is not permitted, and bridal or wedding photography follows separate restrictions. Read the estate policy before planning a session or using estate photographs in marketing.

Craggy Gardens, Blue Ridge Parkway
Mountain views can make a session feel like an outing together. Access, trails and facilities need a date-specific check, especially after weather or road closures. Plan only around routes the National Park Service confirms are accessible, and discuss photography requirements with the park.

Gorges State Park, near Sapphire
Gorges is a hiking-oriented choice, not an easy substitute for a roadside portrait stop. Match the route to your comfort and footwear. Confirm the exact trail, weather and required photography approval; keep portraits on permitted paths and viewing areas.

South Mountains State Park, Burke County
Check this option especially carefully before making plans. As of this November 3 review, the official park page reports High Shoals Falls Trail and waterfall viewing areas closed, along with other facility restrictions. Do not plan waterfall portraits on a closed route.

Reservations and permits before the session
NC State Parks requires approval for paid professional photography. Duke Gardens and Airlie have their own portrait reservations. National parks, private venues and museums have different rules; confirm with the property that manages your exact location. Rules and closures can change after this review.
How I would plan your session
We can start with one main location and a nearby backup. Leave room for walking, a pause to settle in and whatever the weather brings. For a beach session, think about wind and comfortable footwear. For gardens, arrange the reservation first. For a trail, plan the walk back as carefully as the walk in.
